Anchored Beginnings develops essential early literacy foundations through explicit, multisensory instruction. Students build confidence in kindergarten-readiness skills such as letter identification, letter-sound knowledge, phonemic awareness, blending and segmenting, and early high-frequency word reading. Anchored Achievers provides intensive, individualized intervention for readers who benefit from additional support. Instruction focuses on advanced decoding and encoding, fluency development, and closing specific skill gaps while building confidence and stamina in reading. Frequent progress monitoring, customized lesson plans, and increased communication ensure meaningful, sustained growth.

Our Instructional Approach

What Is UFLI Foundations?

At Anchored Reading, we use UFLI Foundations, an evidence-based, structured literacy program developed by the University of Florida Literacy Institute. Grounded in the science of reading and built on the principles of Orton-Gillingham instruction, UFLI provides a comprehensive framework for teaching foundational reading skills to students in kindergarten through fifth grade.


The program is designed to be explicit, systematic, and cumulative, meaning skills are introduced in a logical sequence and consistently reinforced through intentional review and application. UFLI lessons include instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, decoding, spelling, and fluency, allowing students to build mastery step by step.

How It’s Taught

Our lessons follow UFLI’s carefully sequenced scope, introducing one targeted skill at a time while weaving in cumulative review of previous concepts. Each session begins with a quick check-in on mastery, then moves into explicit, teacher-led instruction where we model the new skill step by step. Students apply what they’ve seen through guided practice—reading, spelling, and manipulating words under our support—before moving on to independent work with immediate corrective feedback.


We regularly monitor progress using informal assessments, adjusting the pace and focus of instruction based on data. Our one-on-one format allows us to scaffold lessons precisely to each student’s needs, and we assign tailored home practice that aligns with classroom activities. Between sessions, we share  notes and suggestions so parents know exactly how to reinforce concepts at home, ensuring steady, measurable growth.

Why It Works

The program’s effectiveness is supported by recent research. In a 2024 study featured in Education Week, UFLI Foundations led to significant gains in early literacy. First graders using the program showed reading growth equivalent to 1.5 years of instruction, far outpacing peers who received traditional instruction. These results reflect the power of using a structured, research-backed approach to reading.


Structured literacy programs like UFLI are effective for all students because they make the structure of language clear and accessible. This approach is especially important for students who struggle with reading, including those with dyslexia, as it provides the explicit instruction and cumulative practice they need to succeed.
