Anchored Essentials is offered in literacy instruction for students in grades K-8. After a comprehensive reading assessment, tutoring is tailored to your child's individual needs and goals. Our focus is on providing evidence-based instruction, grounded in the science of reading, to strengthen decoding skills in order to increase reading fluency. Tutoring services will include in-depth instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, fluency practice, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.

Our Instructional Approach
What Is UFLI Foundations?
At Anchored Reading, we use UFLI Foundations, an evidence-based, structured literacy program developed by the University of Florida Literacy Institute. Grounded in the science of reading and built on the principles of Orton-Gillingham instruction, UFLI provides a comprehensive framework for teaching foundational reading skills to students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
The program is designed to be explicit, systematic, and cumulative, meaning skills are introduced in a logical sequence and consistently reinforced through intentional review and application. UFLI lessons include instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, decoding, spelling, and fluency, allowing students to build mastery step by step.
How It’s Taught
UFLI’s approach is multisensory and interactive. Students engage with concepts through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic activities, which help strengthen learning and support long-term retention. Every session also incorporates fun, skill-based games and activities to keep students engaged while reinforcing what they’ve learned. The program’s clear structure and visual supports make it highly effective in a virtual format, allowing for consistent interaction and hands-on learning—even from a distance.
Why It Works
The program’s effectiveness is supported by recent research. In a 2024 study featured in Education Week, UFLI Foundations led to significant gains in early literacy. First graders using the program showed reading growth equivalent to 1.5 years of instruction, far outpacing peers who received traditional instruction. These results reflect the power of using a structured, research-backed approach to reading.
